I Knew I Was Missing Something About Nokia

I haven't been able to get Nokia out of my head since its shares plummeted after the Microsoft announcement. Nokia is the largest manufacturer of mobile phones. They make great hardware but hideous software. Microsoft has software. Nokia is at a 5 year low. Microsoft's new interface might even be nicer than the iPhone's and Androids'.

This trade looked like a slam dunk.

Then I found this post from a former Design interface director at Nokia. He says they have one small problem. The decision makers at Nokia have no taste. Nokia has a blindness to the value of a good design at the upper levels.

This just killed my interest in Nokia until further notice.

If you work in any area of design or creation, you know if the top guy has no taste, you are dead. The best ideas will die. You can argue or beg until you are blue in the face, but all you do is ending up looking like an asshole. The inferior idea will win out and be developed and get its face ripped off its skull in the harsh light of competition.

Elop may appreciate design, but he has a whole culture to turn around. A culture with no taste means any good idea will probably be derailed.

Thank god I'm always looking for a reason to not do something when it comes to investing.
