
I know I know I know. You would think I would talk about art or illustration ONCE in a while. What can I say? My giant round head gets easily distracted. Besides, people keep yammering for me to run for President and it has taken most of the year to GET THEM OFF MY BACK. There is another reason I rarely talk about creating art:
Creating art that doesn't SUCK is really really hard.
Once I had a friend who was trying to figure out how to add energy to his illustrations. He knew everything about technique and all the theories and philosophies for creating art, but he could not create compelling illustration. I told him creating art was like being a DJ and his job was to fill the dance floor. You can know all the academic crap in the world, but if you don't know what brings dancers to the floor, if you can't feel it in your bones, YOU ARE DOOMED. Creating compelling art is something like this:

So basically, creating great art is like the channeling the Isley Brothers and having them guide your hands.
I hope this has been helpful advice and you will use it for the common good.
I would love to go on and on, but I have deadlines for clients.
